Its Debatable

I've been having an internal debate these last few weeks. Well, months really. And I have decided to place the out come of the debate in your hands. Here is the question...

If I print it will you buy it?

Since starting to work at my mixed media pieces, I have wondered if I should sell prints along with the originals. The very very insecure, critical, artist inside me is quite convinced that it would be a total waste to purchase a high grade art quality printer, scanner, and archival papers to sell prints. Then, there is the more business savvy, confident, optimistic, dreamer in me that thinks my pieces are unique and that it would totally be worth the investment.

I am sick of arguing with my selves. Please, take a moment to click yes or no on the poll to the right! It is totally anonymous so feel free to really click what you feel.

I think that you should make calendars. I would totally buy a calendar. I say that because I am very fickle with artwork, and I love great calendars because then every 30 days or so I get something new to look at.

I like Holly's idea! I used a service last year to make calendars with my kids pics on them that are housed in a CD case. Really great because I slapped a magnet on the back and it hung on my fridge, but also it changes monthly, is small for a desk, and is easily stored for a lifetime of memories! Contact me if you want more info. But I also think that cards are a great option in addition to prints. I am an exhibiting member at an artist coop. A new artist displayed her two lovely owl oil paintings. I immediately thought of myowl-obsessed beader friends! I asked her if she had any cards or small prints. She looked at me like I was out of my mind! Now I love my owl-obsessed beader friends, but not $600 worth of a 2.5 foot square oil painting variety! But I would totally buy some cards to send to my friends... the artist actually told me to TAKE A PICTURE of her artwork to share. Wow. All I can say is...wow.
I would say do it! I would personally love to own an ORIGINAL (depending on price of course) but for some of us, the prints are the next best thing. And you can get really cool canvas to print on that makes it almost look like the real thing. I have another friend online who does that...let me know if you want me to track down that info. You go, Kerry! I love it!
Enjoy the day!

P.S. Anonymous? Me?! Not a chance. That's my 2cents and then some. Take it or leave it!

definitely kerry - one question though - do the prints get a real glass bead accent? since your paintings seem to have about 5 beads and some wirework, would you consider putting one kind of each accent on them?
then maybe do a notecard or calendar...
i just know that for me, even that one small touch would place your prints (besides them being by you) above the rest...

Calendars is a great idea, I like it a lot:)

I've already purchased some small prints on Etsy and absolutely love them:) One of the artist nicely included a small magnet of another one of her pieces and I ended up purchasing it!

How about you also offer sets of cards? You could test the waters that way and see if people are "interested" -(you won't need to spend as much on expensive equipments).

Love your work:) Have a great week-end,

Patricia

My vote was Yes, yes, yes!

My sense is that there are more women who buy jewelry than there are women who buy prints. Wall space is limited. Space for jewelry is almost unlimited, as it takes so little, and the allure of decorating oneself is never sated.

I think you'd do better investing your time elsewhere. Or making more originals and selling them for somewhat higher prices.

But that's just my intuition. I'm not an art market expert.

I think it's a great idea and I also agree with the others. Cards are always terrific & calendars are a wonderful idea. I get a new one each year at an art show that's held every August here in my home town.

My vote would be for calendars or note cards. I love to buy note cards that are unique. I too am wondering about the beads and wire on the copy. Vikki

I love the idea of cards with a bead attached...um..but what about mailing?
I do like the calendar idea. Your work is so colorful and fun, it would make a great calendar. Try so REALLY tight closeups...it could be very cool!
