From The Side Of The Road

(aka... boredom busting project #1)

Today I bring you a cheap and easy project to combat an otherwise boring day. All you need is an hour and at the end, you'll have a really cool art project for any area of your house. My project, it got hung in the newly remodeled bathroom.

salvaged window project 3

What you need: 1 salvaged window left on the side of the road or found in some falling down old barn (my sister actually collects these to do paintings on, so I stole this one from her apartment)... price ZERO Dollars.

salvaged window project 4

1 old book with neat line drawings, mine is from an estate sale and is titled "Life and Adventure Medieval Europe" from 1936... price 25 cents. I grabbed this book from my collection of old books to recycle for this project because it was very yellowed. I wanted to bring more yellow into the bathroom to make it look like those old yellow tiles might actually be there for a reason. HA!

salvaged window project 5

1 jar of Modge Podge... you can get it at any craft store, and I consider this a negligible cost because I have used it on some many different projects.

What to do: Flip the window over so you are looking at the back. Coat the glass in a thin layer of modge podge. Rip pages from the book and tear them into large chunks. Lay the image side down on the modge podged glass. Add more modge podge to the back of the paper pieces. Roll out any bubbles that form. Let dry... then hang it up.

This is just one way I filled by bored Friday. I will let you know what other project I worked on tomorrow.

This looks really cool, Kerry! I love the book page idea, and it looks just great in your bathroom. I have a similar old-window project hanging in my hallway...I spray-mounted b/w photos of my family on it. Since it's removeable spray mount, I can change out the photos as new ones come along...

This looks so fun and it looks awesome hanging in your bathroom. This weekend is the big Bouckville antique fair, so I think I will look for windows like this. so cool!
thanks for the idea Ker!

That is great! Whenever I see old windows on the side of the road I think of you. I must confess that I am a dumpster diver also.

Great idea with the book pages - perfect in your BR.
These windows are fun - I have a tall skinny one just propped up against a wall in my family room for interest.
Good source is a window company installing new windows in an old house. They can be free as it saves the company money by not having to haul them away.
Looking forward to your next
'boring' project!!

I don't know how you would ever be bored Kerry! I know that I would relish the idea of playing with these great ideas with you at your house....what a neat project and the crowning touch on your remodel. We just painted and updated our bathroom and I need some inspiration for an art piece. This gives me hope that maybe we could do it ourselves!
Enjoy the day!

Really great project Kerry!!
And one you can redo and use over and over as the mood strikes you!!

We have an old window frame in our sunroom we hang our cards to each other on. This piece of junk as a friend said when he helped us unload the tiny trailer we moved in, was hauled all the way from Idaho?? Yep a 5'/8' trailer with all our worldly possessions!! But you can't find old window frames here. Way to many termites in the subtropics. A girl has to do what a girl has to do! :)

Hi Kerry
I think I remember that old window..or another one like it. It has so much character. Your project turned out great! I always love to see what you're up to! :-)

That's pretty slick, Kerry! I just happen to have SEVERAL of those windows out in my barn. (I was going to build a greenhouse, but made several cold frames instead) I think I'll try this some time. Thanks!
